COUNSELING DIVERSE POPULATIONS

This course explores the cultural, social, and systemic factors influencing counseling practices with diverse populations. Students will examine the impact of identity, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, and ability on mental health. Emphasis is placed on developing cultural competence, self-awareness, and strategies for addressing bias and power dynamics in counseling. Through case studies, experiential learning, and evidence-based approaches, students will learn to provide effective, inclusive, and equitable support to clients from varied backgrounds. This course prepares future counselors to work ethically and competently in multicultural and global contexts, promoting understanding and inclusivity in their practice.

Credits: 3 credits equivalency
