Ethics and Legislative Compliance in Mental Health

ETHICS & LEGISLATIVE COMPLIANCE IN CLINICAL COUNSELING:

This course provides an in-depth exploration of the ethical principles and legislative frameworks that govern clinical counseling practice. Students will examine key ethical theories, decision- making models, and the application of professional codes of ethics, including those from organizations such as the ACA (American Counseling Association) and APA (American Psychological Association). The course also addresses federal, state, and local laws and regulations impacting clinical practice, such as HIPAA, mandated reporting, and licensure requirements.

Through case studies, discussions, and practical exercises, students will learn to navigate complex ethical dilemmas and ensure compliance with legal standards. Topics include client confidentiality, informed consent, dual relationships, cultural competence, and the ethical use of technology in counseling. By the end of the course, students will have the skills and knowledge to uphold ethical integrity and adhere to legislative requirements in diverse counseling settings.

Prerequisites: None, though prior coursework in psychology or counseling is recommended.
